Yesterday Daisy and I drove from Vermillion to Rapid City in South Dakota. About half way across the state, I-90 crosses over the Missouri River. From this on, Lewis and Clark (L&C) continued north on the river, and I'll be getting back to them in a week or so. Daisy and I proceeded west to the Black Hills.
This is a beautiful rest area w/ breathtaking vistas of the river, a nice museum of L&C and other SD history as well as clean bathrooms and a nice area to walk Daisy. Many other dogs and their humans were there.
As you drive west from the Missouri River, the land changes dramatically. The land rises to a high, flat plain witgh very few trees. Then it gets a little hilly before the land drops away to the Badlands--see next post.
It must be that the area you describe west of Chamberlain is what became known as Ole's prairie. He loved that land so very much did he not?
